INTERESTING THINGS TO DO IN THE CITY OF MOGILEV, BELARUS

The city of Mogilev has an area of 118.5 km ² and is the 6th on the list of the biggest Belarusian cities.

In addition, more than 50% of the territory is counted as agricultural land.The Mogilev region is one of the major industrial regions of the country. It specializes in manufacturing such products as elevators, steel pipes, cement, slate, synthetic fibres and filaments.

This region is a leader among CIS countries in the production of underground trains and agricultural trailers, which are mostly used for harvesting of grain crops.

ST. NICHOLAS GLAD MONASTERY, MOGILEV, BELARUS

Address of St. Nicholas Glad Monastery is Surta Street, Mogilev, Belarus

In Belarusian Exarchate, The St. Nicholas Monastery dedicated to Orthodox women and is also included in the list of most valuable monuments in the Europe of the Baroque style by UNESCO.

In the 17th and 18th century this monastery was destroyed by the Russian, Swedish and Tartar troops. St. Nicholas Glad Monastery’s history started in the XVII Century with Vladislav IV (The Polish King and also The Grand Duke of Lithuania).

This monastery also was used as an active parochial school, a printing press, a religious school and also a parish. This Parish was closed down after the October Revolution in 1917. And this land of the monastery was given as a storage space also interestingly in the years 1937-1941 it operated as a prison.When the St. Nicholas Church was being restored, there were many remains of the dead were found.

In the times of the Second World war, this Monastery was a book base, just at the beginning of the 1990s the monastery started working once again.

THE THREE SAINTS CATHEDRAL, MOGILEV, BELARUS

Address of Cathedral of 3 Saints — 7 Pervomaiskaya Street, Mogilev, Belarus

This is a major Orthodox Monument in the town of Mogilev, The 3 Saints Cathedral is also the place where final Tsar of Russia used to pray.

The construction of this monument started in the year of 1903, and the construction of this building lasted a little more than 10 years. The exterior architectural design and the interior design of this building is Pseudo Russian Architecture with mix of Old Russian folk arts and architectural styles. It holds all the iconic characteristics of the Silver Age. This was created by P. Kalinin renowned architect of his region and era.

The Cathedral of the Three Saints has a total of 3 entry points, it is constructed in a shape of a cross, these 3 entries are unique on their own as each of these three are dedicated to a patron of the Temple.

As the visitors enter this monument from each different entryways they get an impression of getting inside a uniquely new place.

The Museum of Regional Arts of Mogilev was established in the year of 1990.It got its name after P.V. Maslenikov, The Mogilev Regional Arts Museum is situated in the centre of Mogilev city. It is an important architectural building monument of the early 20th century.

Its architecture is a combination of architectural styles of Late Classicism, Modern Architecture and Pseudo-Russian Architecture.

Its architect and builder is A. Drucker, And this museum has four permanent exhibitions:• Picture Gallery of P.V. Maslenkova (The People’s Artist of Belarus)• Preserved Heritage• Fine Arts from around Mogilev of the twentieth century• Secrets of Cross

ARCHBISHOP GEORGY KONISSKY PALACE, MOGILEV, BELARUS

Address of Residence of Archbishop Georgy Konissky is 1 Konissky’s Archiereisky Val, Mogilev

This place has become a popular spot among tourists and visitors of Mogilev as not only as a great architectural place but also as a museum which holds the whole history of this town inside it.

The Palace of Archbishop Konissky survived the dark days of the 18th Century. This monument was constructed in the years 1772 to 1785.

It is a famous building from the 18th century for George Konissky, George fought for the presence of the orthodox in his days. As of now, just one structure from this monument is preserved as normal which is the Fence and the Brahma.

The Residence of Archbishop George Konissky is now among the places of Historical and Cultural Importance of the Republic of Belarus. It also holds Mogilev history museum.Closed for visitors, only outside guide tours available.

BUINICHSKY FIELD

Address of the Buinichsky Field is Buynichi, Mogilev district

The Buinichsky Field War Memorial memorializes the soldiers and personnel who survived the Siege of Mogilev by the Germans during the World War II in 1941. The bravery of these troops and their love for the motherland is among the most important aspects of Great Patriotic War which lasted from 22 Jun 1941 to 9 May 1945.

There are also many military equipment placed in the Buinichsky Field memorial that include tanks and howitzers, one of the popular interest here is a German Panzer III tank that was captured during the war.

The exact number of mass graves in this place is 63, which contain more than 82,447 soldiers, who died during this battle.

TOLSTOY FAMILY MANOR

The Tolstoy Family Manor is among the most beautiful places in Belarus and it is also equally mysterious.

The famous Russian writer who owns this building, Leo Tolstoy, never got here but this piece of architectural art is still an amazing spot for tourists.

This is a 1 floor Manor and it has a front Stairway, Open terrace to enjoy a great view of the gardens and Cupolas. In the gardens of the Tolstoy Manor are huge with an area of about some ten hectares, there almost 100 years old Siberian pine trees.

BOBRUISK FORTRESS

Address of Bobruisk Fortress is Ulitsa Karbyshava 11, Babruysk, Belarus

The Bobruisk Fortress is a giant fortification that was primarily constructed for the preparation of the battle against Napoleon Bonaparte, During the process of building this massive fortification the entire town which was situated there before was destroyed. This fortress did what it was constructed for; it worked well as the fortress and survived the siege of Napoleon and his army. After the war was over, this fortress was modified and was used as a jail.

When this fortress was converted into a prison, it is said that a special prison chamber was constructed inside it that in the shape of an egg. In this special cell ward, prisoners lost normal brain function within weeks and went crazy.

Even the renowned Russian thinker – writer and Father of Socialism, Alexander Herzen writes:

“ Let it be in Siberia, Let it be just anything. But not this horrible prison on the banks of river Berezina. ”

Now on the side of this fortress is the Babrujk Ice Skating Arena, which is built large enough to accommodate more than 7,000 people at once.

THE VITOLD BELYNITSKY BIRULYA ARTS MUSEUM, MOGILEV, BELARUS

The Vitold Belynitsky Birulya Arts Museum of Mogilev was opened on 24.12.1982 and was designed by the architect E. V. Aladova. The museum has many photographs of Vitold exhibited, there are also his friend’s artworks demonstrated, in honour of their strong friendship.

Among most famous works is “The Portrait of the Mother” (the portrait of Vitold’s mother, made by his best friend). The second floor contains only works of Belynitsky-Birulya, which were created in Soviet times.

CHURCH OF NATIVITY OF VIRGIN MARY, MURAVANKA, MOGILEV REGION, BELARUS

Address of Church of Nativity of Virgin Mary is Schuchin district, Muravanka village, Mogilev Region

The Church of Nativity of Virgin Mary is 600 years old as of now.

This was a place for worship and also acted as a defensive building structure. The construction of this church was done like a fortress or a castle. It has more than 2 meters thick walls, Loopholes, Arrow holes and watch towers.

This church has witnessed and stayed through many wars but was badly damaged during the war between the Russians and Polish.

It had a major reconstruction and restoration in the year of 1882 and a bell tower was built as an addition. The Architecture of this Church is a mix of Gothic and Renaissance, Its Stones, Bricks and Rose windows are worth to see once.

Especially its bricks are called Royal Lily, They symbolize the purity of Virgin Mary. Legends and Fact sheets from the past say it has many secret and mysterious underground passages and tunnels but now people cannot tell from where they start or to where they lead. It is a worthwhile place for adventurers.
